The main character in the novel, Francis de Lange sets out for an enjoyable day visiting the ZigZag Railway near Lithgow. A mistaken identity turns him into a reluctant traveller and student. He attends the University of Marlogna where he is inadvertantly forced to consider whether he would be satisfied with a life in an underground replica of London or whether it is worthwhile to strive for a healthy eco-system on Earth and sustainable development for the future. In addressing this choice Francis faces numerous adventures which put him in touch with economists and philosophers, as well as placing him in some dangerous situations - some of them life-threatening
